According to my research, there are only 5 women out of 46 men photographers…
Explains a lot on my experience every time I go to BH or honestly, any photography shop. I try to ignore it, I let it pass. But if you’ve been in the industry for a long time, it gets to you.
2 weeks ago, I was going to buy a light stand. I asked one of their representatives to show me the choices. He started asking me questions like where am I going to use it, what kind of light etc etc. Already in his manner, I see the usual when they start to act like yeah, that I don’t know what I’m doing and I’m an amateur. But when I started answering his questions, I saw his face a bit shocked. So I was like, okay hopefully we established that not just because I’m a woman, I’m not a serious photographer.
As I was checking the options that he gave me, he started acting again like I’m novice. I was opening one light stand up -I know what you’re thinking, that maybe he’s just being careful, but we’re talking about lightsands here and there’s really no possible damage that it could have. He was still insisting that there is another panel to pull it up. I told him that it’s the most that it can get. But he laughed at me and kind of made me feel embarrassed and got the stand from me. He’s like “See this”, I was like “where” then he realized that actually it’s the most that it can get.
I was just like, here we go again.
All I can say is, these guys… are just really annoying.
I’m not much of a feminist anymore but I do believe that in terms of work, women can really be better than men.
I know this for sure.
